In 2012, the BiDL team was born in the College of Design and Innovation (D&I) at TongJi University, Shanghai. The D&I itself was established in 2009, which created opportunities to start overcoming obsolete habits, generate new concepts and foster further innovation.

As the dust settled and we were looking for approaches on how to push the D&I’s sustainability agenda, Biomimicry appeared as the most promising, inspiring and relevant as well as most holistic but simultaneously also most clearly defined, targeted and applicable approach out there.

Associate Professor Pius Leuba obtained D&I support to establish a sustainability lab. Together with a few co-teachers and students he envisioned BiDL (= Beetle = Biomimetic Design Lab).

Who we are

We are a group of people who intend to make design more positive for human environment and health.
